Marco Polo, an original Chinese opera based on the story of the famous Italian explorer, will hit the stage later this month.

The play presents the epic adventure of Marco Polo who traveled along the ancient Silk Road to reach China in the 13th century, with a focus on the history of trade and cultural exchange between the East and West.

The opera was created by an international team, including Chinese opera writer Wei Jin, German composer Enjott Schneider, and Li Shaosheng who composed three of the arias. The creative crew also includes British video designer Luke Halls, British lighting designer Bruno Poet, and London-based set and costume designer Emma Ryott, who designed more than 1,800 costumes and accessories for this opera.

It was produced by the China Arts and Entertainment Group Ltd. (CAEG) and originally debuted at the Guangzhou Opera House in 2018. After touring cities across China in 2018 and 2019, Marco Polo returned 'home' and was performed at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan and Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy.
