New tunnel to shorten drive from downtown GZ to S. Railway Station
Update: 2021-12-27     Source: Newsgd.com

On December 22, the foundation pit of the Haizhu Bay Tunnel (海珠湾隧道), a tunnel which will shorten the driving time from downtown to the Guangzhou South Railway Station to 15 minutes, has begun to take shape. According to Guangzhou Communication Investment Group, the tunnel is scheduled to be open to traffic at the end of 2024.

Invested and constructed by Guangzhou Communication Investment Group, the Haizhu Bay Tunnel starts from Nanzhou Road and ends at Nanpu Avenue, passing through the Pearl River Lijiao Waterway, Luoxi Island and Sanzhixiang Waterway.

The total length of the tunnel is 4.35 kilometers. Its main line has 6 double lanes and is scheduled to be open to traffic at the end of 2024.

In future, the Haizhu Bay Tunnel will shorten the driving time from downtown to Guangzhou South Railway Station to 15 minutes, forming a fast track to the urban edge and relieving traffic pressure of other main roads.

At present, the preliminary preparations for the foundation pit are basically completed. The pit’s underground diaphragm wall with a depth of 25 meters has been driven into the ground. More than 60 workers are working in the foundation pit, skillfully lifting steel bars and erecting a safety barrier for the pit.

It is expected that by the end of 2022, a shield machine with an outer diameter of 15 meters will commence tunneling from here to the north. This is also the first road project in Guangzhou that uses a super-large diameter shield machine, which will provide new ideas and samples for subsequent tunnel construction.

The Haizhu Bay Tunnel project will also use sound insulation and lay noise-reducing pavements across the entire construction site, so as to reduce noise while improving vehicle driving comfort while creating a green road.
